He never had any altercations with anyone, always treated everyone with respect, and was as caring as he was skilled with a scalpel.

Despite this, however, Carson can be a bit of a coward when it comes to non-medical emergencies, in particular when it comes to operating Ancient Technology. Part of this is due to his sheer terror at operating a Control Chair, being fully aware of what it can do, he doesn’t want to accidentally set something off and kill someone… Especially as that nearly happened in Antarctica with a helicopter and a drone.

He dislikes killing and violence, mostly due to being a doctor. He resists Military command due to being a civilian doctor and, as CMO of Atlantis, is quite firm in his orders when dealing with unruly patients. Usually, people pay attention to him, and he has a solid, but caring, presence when in his element in the OR or in the field.

In medical situations, Carson’s composure is beyond compare. Even in the unchartered territories of the Pegasus Galaxy, he has kept his wits under pressure. A key example being the tricky removal of a Wraith tracking device from a Runner’s spine, it being done with the patient still awake and sat upright, despite Carson’s protests that he might sever his spinal column if there was one wrong move. He managed to complete the surgery successfully.

All in all, Carson is a kind, caring and considerate man. He might be a little cowardly in combat situations, but he’s one of the best medics the SGC and the Atlantis Expedition has to offer. His skill and composure in this area make him a valuable member of any team.
Character's skills/abilities/powers: Carson is a skilled surgeon, often known as the best surgeon in two galaxies. He has considerable knowledge of human and Wraith physiology, is an extremely competent geneticist, and even knows a thing or two about the Ancients and Ascended Beings. He possesses the ATA (Ancient Technology Activation) gene, which he discovered, and is the third-most potent carrier of the gene behind John Sheppard and Jack O’Neill. He’s competent with firearms, but prefers not to use them.
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: 1x Atlantis Headset
1x Ancient Life-Signs detector
1x Ancient Medical Scanner
Are you bringing your character to ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: No
If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s): N/A
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? Carson has always been a character close to my heart, and playing him in a game I enjoy would be the best way to get him some use. His adaptability in new situations will help out the crew, too.

Writing Sample #1: Carson on the TDM
Writing Sample #2 (optional):

comments

A prime example of this is when he locks out the hospital level in Atlantis, after evacuating the rest of his personnel, barring one doctor who volunteered to stay behind. He was set to operate on a member of the expedition infected with an exploding tumour. Upon being confronted by Dr. Rodney McKay about his decision, Rodney described Carson’s patient as being “dead anyway.” Carson’s response was “Like hell he is,” before cutting communications off.

Carson has a witty sense of humour, often making jokes at his own expense.
Being not one of the most technologically minded members of the Expedition, he has a strong aversion to Stargate travel, describing it as a “bloody insanity.” He also has a lack of confidence in himself when it comes to powering Ancient Technology. He frequently complains when he’s forced into a situation where he needs to sit in the Ancient Control Chair, or pilot a puddle jumper.

Carson often seems to talk to much, and has a tendency to ramble on, especially when he’s scared or nervous. This is often to the annoyance and amusement of the other members of his team. A notable example is, while waiting at the Midway Station of the McKay-Carter Intergalactic Space Bridge, Carson suddenly bursts out that he left some turtles back on earth. (See link here.)

Carson is exceptionally bright when it comes to medicine and genetics. He was able to create the ATA Gene Therapy and the Iratus Bug Retrovirus. He works well under pressure, providing that he knows exactly what he’s doing, and people often know him as the best doctor in two galaxies. Despite all of this, Carson is extremely modest, and doesn’t use this reputation very often.

Carson doesn’t often get angry. He mostly gets exasperated at different scenarios. He dislikes people shoving tasks on him that he doesn’t think he will be able to do, and then applying pressure to those situations. For example, flying a Puddle Jumper in an offensive formation against a squad of Wraith Darts attacking Atlantis. (“I’m a doctor, not a bloody fighter pilot!”)
Skills | Powers: Carson is a genius. A very competent doctor, surgeon and field medic. He is the spearhead of the Atlantis Expedition's efforts to find a way to destroy the Wraith via a genetic means. He discovered the Ancient Technology Activation gene, the gene therapy to provide others with the ATA gene and numerous other genetic advances. He is a possessor of the ATA gene, the third-most potent carrier of the gene. This gene serves no other purpose, however.
First Person Sample: [Video]

[The feed flickers on to show the worried face of a man.] So, I'm dead, aye? That explosion...

[A pause, and a sigh.] I knew it was too bloody easy. So. I'm in the underworld, aye? Which one? Hell? [He looks around.] It bloody looks like hell.

...I suppose I did something to deserve this, but I'll be bloody damned that I know what it is...
Third Person Sample: ”He’s as good as dead anyway!” “Like bloody hell he is.” Beckett mumbles, as he turns off his radio. Dear god, Rodney, has anyone ever told you how annoying your voice can be? He doesn’t need any distractions. Not when he’s elbows-deep in someone’s chest cavity to remove an extremely volatile tumour.

Carson is sweating under the surgical lights as he attempts to get in at the tumour, which had built up behind Dr. James Watson’s lungs. He had to do this, or he’d feel guilty. He was the one that gave the scientist a clean bill of health last night, and it was up to him to fix this.

The OR Level had been sealed, and the only people left were Carson and his nurse, Marie. He was grateful for her help, but she hadn’t needed to stay. She was right, though. Carson couldn’t do this alone…

Rodney wouldn’t be able to crack his command code in time, Carson knew. He was on his own until he removed the tumour or it… No, he wasn’t going to think about that. He could see the bloody thing, as he moves his instruments around to try and pluck it out…

Success! He’d managed to remove the tumour and now he was, very carefully, moving around to place it in the frozen organ containment box. Once done, he strips his gloves off and reactivates his radio. “Okay, colonel. I’ve removed the tumour. I’m unlocking the OR Level now.”

Carson flops into a seat, leaving Dr. Watson in the capable hands of Marie to close him up. He relaxes, sighing, eyeing the box that contains the tumour.

“Sod it, I’m going to meet them half way. The discovery was a metal ring, nearly 7 meters in height. The inner ring was decorated with 39 unknown symbols etched into it.

The ring remained in Egypt until 1939, until, fearing that the device was some sort of weapon, the US Government had it moved to America, to prevent the Nazis from using it.

The device remained in control of the Americans, hidden and moved from one secure facility to the next. It eventually ended up in the bottom of a missile silo at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, home of NORAD.

In 1995, Dr. Daniel Jackson was able to successfully translate a cartouche found in Giza with the device. It was revealed to be a method of creating a stable wormhole between two similar devices, allowing interstellar, and even intergalactic, travel. Translated from the same source was the name chappa'ai, or Stargate.

From 1995 onwards, the SGC, or Stargate Command, was established. Their job was to explore the planets in the Stargate network and bring back technology, forge relations, and to stop alien threats to Earth.

During this period, the creators of the Stargate network were discovered. A race of aliens from another galaxy known as the Ancients. The Ancients lived millions of years ago, and were a peaceful and extremely advanced society.

Arriving in the Milky Way from another galaxy, to escape the oppression of the Ori, the Ancients seeded inhabitable planets with Stargates, and established civilisations on a few planets. Notably, Earth. The planet was dubbed as "Terra" by the Ancients, which, literally translated, means "Earth."

It is said that the Ancients were responsible for the evolution of humans on the planet, in an effort to populate the galaxy before departing once more.

An outpost was discovered in Antarctica, of Ancient design. After researching it, a Stargate address was uncovered. An address that would lead to another galaxy. It was suspected, after translations of Ancient texts in the Outpost, that it would lead to the Lost City of Atlantis.

An expedition was formed, using representatives of many of Earth's countries, due to the nature of the information.

The Atlantis Expedition left Earth via the Stargate. They left on the pretense that they would not be able to return.

What they found on the other side was what they expected; The Lost City of Atlantis itself.

Atlantis is large enough to cover the area of Manhattan. Despite being millions of years old, the city is full of technological marvels. Originally anchored to the bottom of the sea, the city arose from the depths once the Atlantis Expedition arrived from Earth.

The city has numerous towers, the tallest being the Command tower. This includes Ops, the OR level, the Gate room, and many important areas. Spread out from the main complex and the Inner City are 6 piers that enable the city to float on the surface of the water.

The Ops level and Gate room is where the main control centre for the city is. The Ops centre contains the dialling device for the Stargate, as well as the Cityshield controls and various others.

Atlantis is also a space-travel capable ship, encompassing a sublight engine and a hyperspace drive. The atmosphere, when in flight, is maintained by the Cityshield, which is a powerful energy shield that covers the entire city and can protect from most threats.

Atlantis is one of the most perfectly preserved pieces of Ancient technology, kept safe by it's shield and it's planet's ocean for ten thousand years. The Ancients used Atlantis not only as a home, but as a forefront for scientific development on all fronts.

As such, there are dangers within Atlantis itself. Failed experiments get reactivated as the Expedition explores more and more of the city. Some are inconvenient, but most can be deadly.

The city is, ideally, powered by devices called Zero-Point Modules. The City is designed to run on three of these devices, but can run perfectly fine on two, and even one.

The Stargate connects to all the Gates that the Ancients left in the Pegasus Galaxy. The Atlantis Expedition uses the Stargate to explore the new galaxy and establish relations with the people of the galaxy, who were brought to the Pegasus galaxy by the Ancients on Atlantis.

One of the main trading partners with the Atlantis Expedition was a group of people called the Athosians, from the planet of Athos. Athos was the first planet that the Atlantis Expedition had gone to. They developed a rapport with it's people and leader, a woman called Teyla Emmagan. They even provided refuge and a new home for the Athosians when they came under threat from an enemy that was plaguing the galaxy.

This threat was called the Wraith. The Wraith are an insectoid/human hybrid creature, who feed on human lives to sustain themselves. They absorb life-force via the palms, culling the humans in Pegasus like cattle.

The Wraith, to let their human "herds" replenish themselves, often hibernate for centuries at a time in their hive ships, leaving only a few awake for the protection of the hive.

The arrival of the Atlantis Expedition, and their first encounter with the Wraith, led to their premature waking. The Wraith, knowing that human numbers in Pegasus were still too low to be considered a viable food source, turned their eyes on a new target; Earth.

The Wraith quest to take Atlantis, as it is the only way to reach Earth, and a new, human-rich feeding ground.

But this is not all.

The current state of the human populations of the Pegasus Galaxy is dire. They haven't yet recovered their numbers from the previous cullings, and some are desperate enough to do unspeakable things in order to eliminate the Wraith.

One of these races is called the Genii. The Atlantis Expedition first encountered the Genii through Teyla Emmagan, and made contact with the hopes that they could provide food to help sustain Atlantis.

It was later discovered that, hidden from the Wraith underground, the Genii had managed to preserve their way of life without it being culled down by the Wraith. Seen as a sort-of 1940's Earth, the Genii had even gone as far as to create experimental nuclear weapons.

Knowing that the technology of Atlantis, and the Expedition's own technology, far surpass their own, the Genii will do anything to get their hands on the city and it's wonders; from trade to kidnapping, to murder.

Ultimately, the Pegasus Galaxy is a hive of wonders and dangers in equal measures, where the humans from Earth strive to explore and protect themselves, and the friends they have met along the way.

Personality: Carson is generally kind, polite and caring.

Being a doctor means that he has a strong moral compass.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions:

Carson is not magical. The only non-human ability he has is the possession of the Ancient Technology Activation gene, which enables him to activate and use Ancient Technology.

Non-Super Abilities include the fact that he is a very skilled surgeon, general practitioneer and geneticist. He is also an adept feild medic, able to perform triage until the patient is safely able to be operated on.

Inventory: 1 Atlantis Radio Headset, 1 Ancient Medical Scanner, 1 Standard Atlantis Expedition uniform, 1 Ancient Life-Signs detector, and 1 Wraith Stunner
Appearance: Carson in plain clothes, Carson in his expedition uniform

Carson often wears his Atlantis Expedition uniform, which comprises of the signature jacket of the Expedition. His position in the Medical department is displayed by the yellow patches on the beige jacket. On his arms are the Atlantis Mission Patches and the Scottish flag.

On occasion, Carson is seen to be wearing looser clothes and a standard white lab coat, and sometimes surgical dress when performing surgery.

He also has black combat gear, which lacks all identification patches, used in the Expedition's off-world missions when they wanted to keep their identity secret.
Age: 35

OC/AU Justification
If AU, How is Your Version Different From Canon, and How Will That Come Across? N/A
If OC, Did You Run Your Character Through a Mary-Sue Litmus Test? N/A
And What Did You Score? N/A

Samples
Log Sample: ”He’s as good as dead anyway!” “Like hell he is.” Beckett mumbles, as he turns off his radio.

The sooner I get this thing out of my bloody sight, the better."

Network Sample:

[The face of Dr. Beckett flickers into view, the man looking uneasily at the device broadcasting his likeness and audio] Uh, hello there...

[His voice is accented Scottish] I'm Dr. Carson Beckett, and I guess I'm new here. I may be a wee bit out of my depth, but I'm still a doctor first. Is there any medical facilities I can volunteer my services? I'm a dab hand with learning Alien technology, too. Atlantis was full of it, after all...

comments
